Kongshan Monastery welcomed its surrounding neighbors into the mountain sanctuary for the first time, offering an open and relaxed opportunity to learn about monastic life and practice.

On April 26, 2026, Kongshan Monastery hosted its inaugural neighborhood visit. Led by Beekman Town Supervisor Laureen, the group of 14 guests included Deputy Supervisor Kate, County Legislator Joe, and local residents. The event began at 11:30 a.m. in the Redwood Hall Dharma Hall, featuring a vegetarian lunch, a monastery presentation, a meditation experience, and a guided tour of the grounds, concluding with open dialogue and a Q&A session — all in a warm and relaxed atmosphere.

For the occasion, the monastic community personally prepared an elegant vegan meal, including sushi, spring rolls, vegetable salad, miso soup, and handmade mango tarts — simple yet heartfelt dishes offered as a sincere welcome. Throughout the meal, guests expressed admiration for the quality of the food, discovering a new appreciation for the variety and richness of plant-based cuisine.

After the meal, guests entered the Buddha Hall to hear monastics introduce the founding story of Kongshan Monastery, its vision, and the daily life of monastic practice. For many local residents, this was their first close encounter with a Buddhist monastery and the lives of monks and nuns. The atmosphere was gentle and attentive, with guests naturally and warmly asking questions throughout.

Following the presentation, the monastics led a brief guided meditation, inviting guests to bring their attention to the breath and the present moment. Though short, this experience gradually transformed what had begun as a sightseeing visit into something more personal and inward. Many guests slowed down in the stillness, becoming more attuned to the peace and groundedness that Kongshan's mountain environment naturally offers.

As the event drew to a close, the group made their way to Conch Lake for a guided walk. With a gentle breeze off the water and the mountain forest fresh and quiet around them, guests strolled along the lakeshore, lingered, took photographs together, and shared their longings for connection with nature and a more peaceful way of life. Returning to the Redwood Hall, everyone gathered for open conversation — some asked about the vegan recipes, others shared their own yearning for stillness, and several expressed hope to return with their families in the future.

Beekman Town Supervisor Laureen remarked: "If I could come to a lake like this and meditate before work each morning, it would do wonders for my wellbeing." Other residents shared: "I had no idea there was such a peaceful place for practice so close to where I live — it's truly moving." And: "The lives of the monastics are far richer and more meaningful than I had imagined. I hope to have the chance to bring my family here someday."

A monastery is not only a place of practice for those who have renounced worldly life — it is also a place where conditions arise that can guide all beings toward compassion and wisdom. Through direct encounter and lived experience, guests not only came to know the monastic community, but also glimpsed, in a moment of stillness, the possibilities within their own hearts — where compassion becomes not merely a concept, but a willingness to care for the world; and where wisdom becomes not merely understanding, but the capacity to rest in the present moment and make clear-minded choices.

We are deeply grateful to the Beekman Town government and local residents for their visit and support, allowing Kongshan Monastery — rooted in the mountain stillness — to build a genuine and warm connection with the surrounding community.

Going forward, Kongshan Monastery will continue to organize visits and exchange programs, welcoming more people to enter the monastery, draw close to the Dharma, and experience, in moments of quiet, the transformative power of compassion and wisdom.

We warmly invite everyone to follow Kongshan Monastery's latest news, or to offer support according to your means, joining together to sustain this pure place of practice, carry the Dharma forward, and bring benefit to all beings.
